The name “Hitgeheim” is derived from the surname “Hitge,” meaning “Home or place of the Hitge Family” in German. In Dutch, it translates to “Big Secret,” reflecting Addo’s luxurious secret. The Hitge family relocated from Oudtshoorn to Addo in 1990, purchasing this 238-hectare property of pristine Uitenhage Bushveld in 1999 with a vision to create an exclusive thatched lodge.
It took nearly two years to finalize the building plans and another two years to complete the first four of the now eight chalets. During their final year of construction, the family began training local unemployed individuals in the hospitality industry. The most successful candidates were employed by Hitgeheim Country Lodge, leading to further in-house training and community support initiatives.
The Hitge family takes pride in giving back to the community through training programs and supporting local charities. Hitgeheim Country Lodge opened its doors in October 2003, and since then, it has become a beacon of luxury and conservation in the Eastern Cape.
